Siberian Husky Howling

Video by haleona on YouTube · Watch on YouTube. Local Husky isn't affiliated with this channel.

The video

A Siberian Husky howls at a squeaky ball for 75 seconds. That's it. No editing, no captions, no music, just a dog singing to a toy. It's from 2009, one of the original husky-howling videos, and one of the purest.

Meet the dog and the channel

The dog is Nikita. In the uploader's description, he's "my two year old husky Nikita. As far as huskies go, he isn't as vocal as some, but the one thing that will get him to howl is his squeaky ball. He gets so excited when I get it out for him." The uploader, haleona, has a small channel with about 10,000 subscribers when we checked in November 2026. This one video is almost the whole story. We couldn't find any further public information about Nikita or his owner, and we won't guess. [Flagged for review: thin backstory.]

How it blew up

YouTube gives the upload date as August 28, 2009, and the video had about 12.6 million views when we checked in November 2026. That's a lot of views for a tiny channel. Early YouTube rewarded videos like this, and searches for "husky howling" have kept sending people to it ever since. We didn't find press coverage, which isn't surprising for a 2009 home video.

Our take: no edits, no captions, no music, just a dog and a squeaky ball. Old YouTube had a charm that the algorithm era has mostly lost. If you're wondering whether your husky will howl, this video is a good preview of the answer: probably, and at the strangest things.

The husky science behind it

Howling is long-distance communication, and huskies hold on to it more than most breeds. In pet huskies, it's often set off by sirens, music, other dogs and, apparently, squeaky balls. Nikita is "not as vocal as some" and still howls on cue. That tells you a lot about the breed.

A practical tip

If your husky howls at a certain sound, you can put it on cue. Play the sound, praise the howl, and add a word like "sing" right before it. Then make sure there's also a "quiet" cue, rewarded generously. Your neighbors will appreciate the second one.
